DIGITALIZATION OF GLOBAL ECONOMY REQUIRES TANSFORMATION OF ANTIMONOPOLY REGULATION

Experts will discuss regulators’ approaches to the new realities at the Plenary session – “Development of competition policy and law in the BRICS countries” on 18 September

 

The key issue for not only BRICS antimonopoly regulators but also regulators all over the world is to support competition under the conditions of new economy. Digital era puts plenty of questions to the regulators: protecting competition amidst rapid digitalization, global mergers of the largest companies with enormous innovative potential, countering international digital cartels and much more.  

 

Evidently, technological development forms the basis for economic growth and stimulates innovations. At the same time, digitalization of the global economy requires transformation of antimonopoly regulation, adaptation of regulators’ approaches to the new realities, and review of competition policy in the context of its applicability to the today’s digital economy. .

 

It is not surprising, therefore, that modernization of the antimonopoly law in the digital epoch is one of the key items on the agenda of the VI BRICS Competition Conference.

 

On 18 September 2019, the Opening Ceremony of the VI BRICS Competition Conference will be followed by the First Plenary session on “Development of competition policy and law in the BRICS countries”, where participants will discuss the latest changes to the antimonopoly law and highlight the key trends for developing competition policy in their countries.  

 

The speakers include:

 

Igor Artemiev, Head of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS Russia);

Alexandere Barreto de Souza, President, Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE), Brazil;

Ashok Kumar Gupta, Head of the Competition Commission of India;

Gang Lin, Deputy Minister, of the State Administration for Market Regulation, the People’s Republic of China;

Tembinkosi Bonakele, Head of the Competition Commission of South Africa.
