Talks between the Head of FAS Igor Artemiev and Director of UNCTAD Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, Guillermo Valles
“For many years FAS and UNCTAD have been in productive cooperation and hopefully in the future the trend will not only maintain but strengthen further”, said the Head of FAS Igor Artemiev at the talks with Director of UNCTAD Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, Guillermo Valles on 28 September 2016.
Igor Artemiev pointed out that a trend is being observed when cases on the same markets against large transnational corporations are investigated by competition authorities across the globe; for instance, cases against “Google” or against marine container carriers.
The Head of FAS suggested discussing an issue of joint cartel investigations by several countries at the UNCTAD platform. Guillermo Valles agreed that countering cartels is a crucial question, because cartels constitute one of the most destructive practices in national economies. At the same time the Director of UNCTAD Division said that an approach to the issue should be done through consecutive stages.
The Head of FAS also proposed to engage representatives of the academic community to work on anti-cartel recommendations.
