FAS proposal is included in the agenda of the 16th session of UNCTAD Intergovernmental Group on competition law and policy
On 21 October 2016, the 15th session of the UNCTAD intergovernmental group of experts on competition law and policy closed in Geneva (Switzerland). Deputy Head of FAS Andrey Tsyganov put forward a proposal to include a special issue on developing international legal tools for international cooperation in investigating cross-border cases in the agenda of the 16th session of the UNCTAD intergovernmental group of experts on competition law and policy in July 2017.
The proposal on intensifying UNCTAD efforts for developing mechanisms of international cooperation to combat international cartels and adjust operations of transnational corporations on the markets in developing countries was put forward by the Head of FAS Igor Artemiev in his video address at the opening ceremony of the 15th session of the UNCTAD intergovernmental expert group on competition law and policy on 19 October 2016.
The idea was supported by delegations of Egypt, Brazil, South Africa, Iran, Costa-Rica, Indonesia, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), the Philippines, Vanuatu, Lebanon and Pakistan. Thus, “Strengthening international cooperation in investigating cross-border cases: tools and procedures” was included in the agenda of the 16th session of UNCTAD intergovernmental expert group.
“FAS pays special attention to international cooperation with competition authorities in investigating cross-border cases. We are very happy that our proposal on including the issue in the agenda of the next UNCTAD session was supported by many delegations. It is once again confirms the need to discuss it at the global level and devise action-oriented tools and procedures for cooperation between competition authorities”, pointed out Andrey Tsyganov at the end of the event.
